Disposition: Gunsmith Return

ATF Rules allow for a firearm that was acquired for gunsmith work to be returned to the owner without a 4473 or NICS background check. If the firearm is being picked up by anyone other than the owner on the owner's behalf, a 4473 is required and a NICS background check may be required. In this circumstance, please use the 4473 Client application and 4473 Seller.

In some cases an FFL's customer will return a firearm that the FFL then has to send back to the manufacturer or some other FFL for repair.  In cases that a firearm is Acquired as a Gunsmith firearm, FFL Tools records the serial number and customer's name in the Bound Book and in a secondary database table.  The FFL can then use Dispose to FFL Holder when sending the firearm to another FFL for repair or customizations.  When the firearm is re-acquired from the repair FFL, it will be listed in Dispositions: Gunsmith Return and can be returned directly to the original owner without using a 4473.
